Do I really need a wedding planner? What do they actually do?

Let’s be serious, most people – especially our European clients, where it’s not yet as common to book a wedding planner, as for example in America – think:

1) You can easily plan a wedding yourself (or in Switzerland: your witnesses can – yes, you have read correctly, in Switzerland it’s very common that your best man and your maid of honor plan your WHOLE wedding – for free!!). I mean sure, it is absolutely possible. You can do that, all depends on your vision and how flexible you are with them.. Let me give you some input to think about:

  • would you have your teeth fixed by a friend who has never done it before?
  • would you let someone inexperienced cover the roof of your dream home?
  • why do you book extended round trips at a travel agency?
aaaand: do you want to sit back and look forward to your wedding day or get caught up in the planning stress?

Imagine you (or your maid of honor/groomsmen) are about to do something you (or they) probably have never done before in your (their) life. Most wedding couples are totally unaware of the complexity of wedding planning. Sure, you start highly motivated and choose a date, you’ve had your eye on the photographer for a long time – whoosh, booked! Then the dream location is not available on your wedding date – should you change the photographer booking or change the location? Which florist should you choose – the offer is huge. Decorations? Ordered on amazon, what about chairs, tables, menu cards? Does the location provide everything you need? Your budget is getting smaller and smaller. Slowly it becomes tedious… And in the end, the wedding couples are looking forward to their big day but also glad, when it’s finally over… Is that how you want to feel about your wedding? The outcome of a self-planned wedding can be stunning, but what if the cake or the photographer or the décor doesn’t arrive on time? Do you really want to handle that on your wedding day between make-up and hair styling? Or the poor maid of honor again? Do you have a plan B for your wedding day in case of rain? Or who will dry out the chairs in case there is drizzle 5 minutes before the ceremony? Who will set up your decorations on the big day? I could go on and on..

2) Wedding planners are too expensive!
Wedding planners often offer different levels of coordination to match both your budget and desired level of service. Everything is customized as every wedding is super different. Usually we try to fit in your wedding budget so you don’t have to pay more than actually planned. As we know a lot of vendors, we will pick the best vendors among your budget and wishes, and help you save money you would have spent picking a vendor yourself. Furthermore our vendors might already know the location and the other vendors, so things will run also go a bit more smoothly. Most wedding planners also offer partial wedding planning packages or just consultations per hour. Having your budget under control is a very important task of our work.

But what else does a wedding planner do?
We will fight for your visions and help you to turn them into realty! Our work is also to keep everything on track and and have an eye on due dates. We will get in touch with each vendor and coordinate the perfect time schedule for your wedding day. Wedding planners are the connection between vendors and bridal couples. You will take the decisions, we will do the recommendations. The closer the wedding day comes, the more small details have to be handled. We will double check everything with each vendor in a final meeting a few days before the wedding. Day-Off coordination! We will be there the whole day and make sure everyone and everything is at the right place at the right time. The florist doesn’t arrive on time, the rings got lost, the 4-year-old threw the cake onto the floor? Aunt Karen didn’t get the room she wanted? We will handle whatever happens at your big day. Imagine having to take care (by yourself!) of something that goes wrong just hours before the ceremony.. naaaa!! We want you to be stress free, relaxed and happy!

So now, do you really need a wedding planner? Generally I would say yes. Specially if you are planning to have a destination wedding, I would never try to organize such a task by myself. BUT if you are planning a wedding nearby where you live, have a lot of free time, don’t work full time, are stress resistant and enjoy navigating a new territory together as a couple, then give it a go – you will love it!!
